Anti-Clockwise is the name for New Zealand
musician Brian Crook's latest solo project, following up solo albums
made under his own name as well as Bible Black. Brian is perhaps best
known as one half of the songwriting duo of the primordial alt-country
band the Renderers along with his partner Maryrose, who have been gracing
the world with their grimy take on slithery barroom odes and sci-fi explorations
since 1989, when the band formed in Christchurch.
Brian's musical odyssey began in 1984 in Christchurch,
New Zealand, with Scorched Earth Policy, a band
that was the precursor to the legendary gothic/garage combo the Terminals.
In 1987, he formed his own band, the Max Block, a four-piece featuring
Rebecca Shanahan on drums and backup vocals, Robbie Stowell on bass,
and Maryrose on keyboard and backing vocals. Out of the ashes of the
Max Block came the Renderers, who hewed toward the country side of things
as they launched a career that still continues to this day. As is common
with a lot of the stable of South Island natives, Brian has also served
as a key member of the aforementioned Terminals and the free-noise combo
Flies Inside the Sun.
